The lager that
made Plzeň famous.
Plzeňský Prazdroj was founded in 1842 by the citizens of Plzeň as the Burghers' Brewery. That same year, Bavarian brewer Josef Groll was invited to brew its first bottom-fermented lager, which would make Plzeň famous around the world.
Josef Groll came from Vilshofen, a Bavarian town on the Danube. He learned brewing from his father, also named Josef Groll, at the family's Wolferstetter brewery in Vilshofen, as well as from the renowned Georg Sedlmayer in Munich and the respected Anton Dreher in Vienna.
The Bavarian brewer produced his first batch at the new Plzeň brewery on 5 October 1842. It is said that he deliberately departed from the brewing method without knowing the outcome in advance: he brewed a bottom-fermented Bavarian beer using different, Czech ingredients — Saaz hops, Plzeň's soft water and a lighter malt prepared using English technology. The first batch was tapped on 11 November. Although it did not turn out quite as expected, it proved a great success at the U bílé růže and U zlatého orla inns on Plzeň's main square.

A new chapter.
184 years after that turning point, on the very same date — 5 October — the craft of Plzeň's brewers will find a lasting home at the reborn Moravanka, the legendary Česká Lípa restaurant whose history stretches back to the 1930s.
In 1932, wine merchant and restaurateur Herrmann Flögel moved his hospitality business from what was then Křížová Street to building no. 134 on the main square. Under the name Flögels Weinstube, he laid the foundations for what would become the celebrated Moravanka restaurant.
